Uganda's gorilla trekking experience is also more affordable overall, with lower accommodation and transportation costs compared to neighboring Rwanda.

What can you expect on the day of your trek? Here's a step-by-step breakdown:
5:00 AM – Wake Up
Wake up and have breakfast at your lodge. Pack your day bag with water, snacks, and rain gear. This is an early start, but it's worth it!
6:30 AM – Arrival and Briefing
Arrive at the park headquarters for registration and a briefing from your guides. You'll learn about the gorilla family you'll be tracking and the rules for the trek.
7:00 AM – Group Assignment
Meet your rangers and be assigned to a gorilla family. You'll be grouped with up to 8 trekkers. Each group tracks a different gorilla family.
7:30 AM – 1:00 PM – The Trek Begins!
Depending on where the gorillas are, it can take 2-8 hours. The terrain is steep and muddy. You'll hike through dense rainforest, crossing streams and climbing hills.
The "Gorilla Hour"
Once you find the gorillas, you get one hour to observe, photograph, and marvel. This is the most magical hour of your life. Watching these gentle giants interact, play, and care for their young is an experience that words cannot fully capture.
Afternoon – Return to Lodge
Return to your lodge, exhausted but exhilarated. You'll receive a certificate of trekking completion and memories that will last a lifetime.
Packing correctly makes the difference between an enjoyable trek and a miserable one. Here's Sukarito's essential packing list:
Essential Gear:
• Sturdy hiking boots – Waterproof with ankle support
• Gaiters – To keep mud out of your boots
• Long-sleeved shirt and trousers – To protect from nettles and insects
• Rain jacket – Bwindi is a rainforest!
• Gardening gloves – For gripping vegetation
• Backpack – With water, snacks, and lunch
Optional but Recommended:
• Walking stick – Can be rented at the park
• Camera – With spare batteries
• Binoculars – For bird watching
• Insect repellent – To keep bugs away
What NOT to Bring:
• Bright colors – They can disturb the gorillas
• Perfume or scented products – Gorillas have sensitive noses
• Heavy luggage – You'll be hiking, not sitting
Gorilla trekking is not for everyone. You need to be reasonably fit. The treks can last 2-8 hours and involve steep, muddy, slippery terrain.
How to Prepare:
• Start training 2-3 months before your trip
• Practice walking uphill on uneven surfaces
• Consider hiring a porter ($15-20) to carry your daypack
• If you have mobility issues, discuss your options with your tour operator
Who Should NOT Trek?
• Pregnant women in their third trimester
• Anyone with severe heart conditions
• Anyone with mobility issues that make walking on uneven terrain difficult
If you're unsure about your fitness level, consult with your doctor before booking.
Uganda has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The best time for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons.
Peak Season (June-September & December-February)
• Drier conditions make trekking easier
• Clearer views and better photos
• Higher prices and crowds
• Book permits 3-6 months in advance
Off-Peak Season (March-May & October-November)
• Fewer tourists and lower prices
• Muddy and slippery conditions
• The gorillas are still there!
• Fewer crowds and more intimate experience
Year-Round Trekking
Uganda is a year-round destination, so you can trek gorillas in any month. Just be prepared for mud during the rainy seasons. The gorillas don't mind the rain – they're used to it!
Q: Is Uganda safe for gorilla trekking?
A: Yes. Uganda's national parks are safe and heavily guarded by armed rangers. The parks have been operating safely for decades. Thousands of tourists visit each year without incident.
Q: Can I book a permit on arrival?
A: It's not recommended. Permits sell out months in advance during peak season. Book early to avoid disappointment.
Q: How close can I get to the gorillas?
A: You must remain at least 7 meters (23 feet) from the gorillas at all times. This protects them from human diseases and ensures their safety.
Q: Can I visit multiple gorilla families?
A: Your permit allows you to see one family for one hour. To see more, you would need to book additional permits.
Q: What if I don't find the gorillas?
A: The success rate for gorilla treks is over 98%. If you don't find them on the day, you may be offered a free permit for the next day.
Q: Can children go gorilla trekking?
A: Children must be at least 15 years old to trek gorillas in Uganda. This is a strict rule enforced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Q: Do I need to be vaccinated?
A: Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Uganda. Consult your doctor about other recommended vaccinations.
